Protocols

In a BDSM relationship,
protocol is used to describe rules and behaviors that govern the BDSM relationship.
Due to the different power dynamics in a BDSM relationship,
there are different sets of protocols and honorifics that are required.
This enforced behavior defines the interpersonal dynamic and rituals that take place in the relationship.

 In a BDSM relationship,
protocols often impose constraints and limits on the submissive's behavior,
particularly in social settings,
for example a protocol may specifify that a submissive is not allowed to speak
to an other person without the Dominant's permission, may not speak
unless spoken to and so on.
Protocols are also used to define the behavior and hierarchy between partners.
For example, a submissive may be unable to sit in certain areas
and must refer to her / his Dominant Partner as Master / Mistress and so on.
